BLOG: Next Up: Rounds II and III

It was a bit noisy overnight in northeast North Carolina – we had some heavy rain, thunder, and lightning.  I wish I could say that was going to be the end of the rain for us, but we'll be tracking a couple of rounds of thundershowers through your Thursday.

Here's the set up:

We are tracking a stationary front draped just north of the Ohio River Valley.  As this front starts to sag farther south, we will have another round of showers through the mid-morning hours, then another round of showers and storms later this evening.  Basically, we will be in and out of the shower chances today, so keep your umbrella on standby.

Round I is moving south of the Albemarle Sound, so we'll put that in our rear view mirror.  Round II will make its debut in Hampton Roads closer to 8-9 AM.  MOST of the rain fall north of the Metro, across the Peninsula, Middle Peninsula, Northern Neck, and Eastern Shore.

We will be tracking passing showers from the mid-morning hours through 11 AM to Noon.

Going through the second half of the day, expect partly sunny skies with highs in the low-90s and dewpoints in the low-70s – the frizz factor will be high today!  Anyway..  The sun will actually work against us because it will destabilize our atmosphere and lead to a better chance of some isolated strong to severe storms as Round III crosses Hampton Roads this evening.

As this stationary front turn cold front drops through, that will spark scattered showers and thunderstorms.  The Storm Prediction Center has placed our entire viewing area under a slight risk for the possibility of some strong/severe storms this evening, after 7 PM.

IF we see any severe storms develop, the primary threats will be strong winds and/or hail.  The tornado threat will be farther north and west, closer to the Ohio River Valley.  IF any severe thunderstorm watches or warnings are issued, we'll let you know on-air and also online at WAVY.COM.

We'll keep scattered showers and storms in the forecast through the early morning hours on Friday.

If you're a light sleeper, you might wake up a few times overnight!

Unfortunately, that front will stall out across Hampton Roads tomorrow, so that will force us to keep more clouds than sunshine in the forecast along with a chance of occasional showers.  At least it'll be cooler on Friday with highs back in the low-80s.

Look forward to the weekend!  Not just because it's the weekend, but because we will see abundant sunshine Saturday and Sunday with highs, comfortably, in the low-80s!
