Top Most Popular and Customizable WordPress and Magento Themes Of 2017
If you're looking to set up a blog for yourself or your company, consider any of these blog WordPress themes. If your plans call for an eCommerce site instead, Magento is the way to go.
Both WordPress and Magento are customizable as they are out of the box, but if you want to fast-track your development process or you don't have the required resources or expertise to set them up the way you want them to be, ready-made themes are the answer. This is true, regardless of whether you're a rookie or an expert user.
When choosing a WordPress theme to use for your blog or your website, how customizable the theme should rank high on your selection criteria, particularly if you're looking to differentiate your website from the rest of the pack. The same thing can be said if you're looking to set up an eCommerce site using Magento theme.
For both WordPress and Magento, you can gauge how customizable a theme is by asking how well they stacked up to the following questions:
Once you've narrowed down your search for a highly-customizable theme using the above parameters, you should look at the popularity of the themes on your short list next. How many times has the theme been downloaded? Are the ratings good? If a theme is popular, chances of it being able to meet your requirements are excellent as well.
Of course, you actually have to try it out to see if it fulfills your needs. That's what the 14-day, money back guarantee that TemplateMonster offers on all its templates is for.
Below we present the most popular, customizable WordPress and Magento themes of 2017 on the TemplateMonster store. We looked first at the customizability of each template, then ranked them based on their rating and the number of times they have been downloaded from TemplateMonster.

How to Start a WordPress Blog: Part 1 รข Technical Requirements
Rachel RevehlCopywriter for Go MediaCo-Owner & C.E.O. of Law Firm Ghost Writer
We heard the news. You just launched your own blog. Congratulations! A whole new world has just opened up for you.
It's time to start connecting with your audience. Are you ready? Let's go! In this six-part post, we're going to introduce you to some things you need to know now that you'll be blogging here on WordPress. Today, we're going to start off by discussing the technical requirements of any given blog post, along with some notes and suggestions related to each. Here goes!
300 – 500 words. This word count is just your body copy – before you add your Byline, Tag line, Additional Resources line & More Blog Entries line. For a general idea, 500 words is about five paragraphs, or roughly a full page on a Word doc. More is great. Less is not.
Choose a keyword for your blog. This usually isn't one word, but rather a phrase. Your keyword is the basis of your article. It's often a term for which readers/customers/clients might typically be searching or search engines would recognize as industry-specific. For our clients, it's something as simple as, "website design" or "graphic design" or "Cleveland web design" or "Cleveland graphic design" It could be your company name. It could more specific like, "poster design" or "illustration" (Search engines like when you switch it up, so don't be afraid to do that.) If possible, work your keyword in the title of your blog. Get a reference up high at the top of your blog, in the first two or three paragraphs (or at least reference an industry-specific keyword.) Weave your keyword two-to-three times (no more than that) in the blog copy. These references should be natural, not forced.
Title your blog. Your blog title should make a statement or ask a question or at least offer a complete phrase – not just be a noun or verb. So rather than simply say, "Defying the Hand" we say, "Defying the Hand: How Weapons of Mass Creation Fest is Impacting Young Artists' Lives." You could also go with something like, "Defying the Hand: Are Young Artists' Lives Being Impacted by Weapons of Mass Creation Fest?" See if you can work one of your keywords into the title – i.e., "website design," "graphic design," etc. Bonus points if you can work in a "geo reference" (i.e., Ohio City, Cleveland, Ohio). BUT Do Not Force It. An example might be: "Defying the Hand: How Cleveland graphic design conference Weapons of Mass Creation Fest is Impacting Young Artists' Lives." It's a bit longer title, but it's worth it to throw those in every once-in-a-while.
If you change your title, (which you probably will as you are writing), make sure you also update the "Permalink" directly underneath. Just copy your new headline, click "Edit" next to the Permalink line, paste your new headline and click "OK." You want to make sure the headline & permalink match.
Start each blog with a "Byline." You are not ghostwriters. You ARE the authority. Publishing a blog is a means to establish yourself as one who is knowledgeable in this field, which:Instills confidence in the reader AND Improves your own personal brand PLUS It's rewarding to see & share your own published professional work.Make sure to put your Byline in Italics. Link back to your own page on the "Team Members" site. Do this by highlighting your name, clicking, "Insert Link" and add your URL from your personal team page and click the arrow to save.
Include "Anchor Text." This is where you link back to a specific page on your site that corresponds to the body copy. For example, if we are talking about graphic design in our blog post, we will often link to our graphic design service page. Do this by highlighting the text you want to link, clicking "Insert Link" and add the URL. Important about this: You usually can & should work in a geo-reference around your link, i.e., "Cleveland web design agency" or "Graphic design company in Cleveland." BUT – typically, you only want to link two or three words (in that case, "web design agency" or "graphic design company"). Do NOT link the city or region. (Google is weird & penalizes linked geo-references for being too spammy.)
After about the second or third paragraph (whatever would be a natural stopping point for "the jump,"), insert a "Read More" tag. Do this by clicking on the "Insert Read More" tag on the top bar. This will break up the copy on the main blog page so that people will only need to see the first couple paragraphs, and then they can decide if they want to click to keep reading.
If it makes sense (you shouldn't have to force it), try to find at least one official source to link back. This source can either be offering the crux of your blog – the reason you're writing it – or simply giving a related fact that pertains to your topic. Linking to official/ credible sources boosts your SEO. Credible sources include News organizations, scientific journals, official government agency sites, universities, hospitals, businesses, etc. A news source might include but is not limited to: The News-Press, Naples Daily News, NBC-2, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, FOX News, etc. Just make sure it's legit & not hyper-partisan or clickbait. A government agency might include The CDC, the National Safety Council, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the National Institutes of Health, etc. A scientific journal might include: Pediatrics, The Social Science Journal, Journal of Food Science, The Journal of Neuroscience, etc. When you link to these (or any outside sources): Highlight the text, click, "Insert Link" and paste the outside URL. Before you close it, click the "Link Options" widget. When that window opens up, click, "Open link in new tab." Then "Add Link." It's important to open these in new tabs because you don't want readers completely drifting away from your site.
Every blog should have at least one Categories selected. Go to Categories and choose your category. Done!
Every blog should end with a "tag line" that is Italicized and looks like this: Go Media offers web and graphic design services in Cleveland, Ohio, and anywhere outstanding design services are needed. Call (216) 939.000 or Contact Us online. Literally, copy & paste this at the bottom of every blog & then just change the service area to match the one about which you are writing. i.e., "website design," "print design" etc.
Every blog should end with an "Additional Resources" line that includes an outside reference (if applicable): Article headline, Date, Author(s) (if given) and Name of Publication. This can just be the same outside credible source to which you linked earlier, or you may choose to add a different one. Link to this as you would any other outside source. Highlight the text, click, "Insert Link" and paste the outside URL. Before you close it, click the "Link Options" widget. When that window opens up, click, "Open link in new tab." Then "Add Link."
Every blog should end with a "More Blog Entries" section. This is where you link back to previous blogs on the site. Simply open one of the previous blogs in a separate window, highlight that URL, copy & paste that into the "Insert Link" tab.
Every blog should contain at least one "tags." Simply click in the "Tags" section on the right column. Type in your tags. These would be phrases like, "design," "graphic design," "creativity," "entrepreneurship," "art."Every blog should contain a "Featured Image." Without this, it will display blank on the main page carousel. You can upload your own featured image. HOWEVER, you may find there are technical considerations. Specifically: Images need to be shot in landscape (horizontal) not portrait (vertical). If you are uploading your own Featured Image, you need to make sure the Width is 720. If you choose instead to go with an image from a free stock image site (I find this much easier), upload from one like unsplash.com.
Do not use stock pictures with faces, as a general rule. Make sure the image is horizontal. Generally, think color or vibrant unless tone of the blog is more subdued. To upload the image: Go to the "Feature Image" widget on the lower right column. (Make sure it's NOT the "Header Background Image.) Click "Upload Files." Drag & Drop or Select Image. Write a Title & then add Alt Text to match your keyword. If you are unsure whether your photo is too large, Look under "Attachment Details." It will show you the image size. If you need to adjust it (which should only be the case if you are uploading your own photo), click, "Edit Image." Put "720" as the first value. It will automatically "Scale." Close the box. (You typically will not need to resize images you upload from the free stock image sites.)
Stay tuned for Part 2, How to Preview, Post and Schedule your Blog Post, coming up next week. Until then, check out this post:

Blog vs. Vlog: Is There a Right Choice?
—Blogging or vlogging isn't normally what I care for very much; an occasional article read or a video watched is as far as I usually go. However, even with my skepticism, I cannot deny that both these activities are becoming more and more effective marketing techniques, and no business owner can completely ignore their appeal. That is why I sought the advice of an acquaintance of mine who has been dabbling in both blogging and vlogging for a number of years, and here is what I learned.
Blog: ProsKeeping a blog nowadays is much easier than it used to be, with the proliferation of platforms like WordPress, Tumblr, and others. You have ready-made tools that don't require any specific knowledge and can be set up in a matter of minutes, and everything you need in terms of equipment is a computer and an Internet connection. Basically, the only requirement is that you have to be reasonably good at writing (although it may come with experience, people with no aptitude whatsoever can have a hard time) and have something useful and/or interesting to say.
Blog: ContrasBlogs have become a mainstay of business and corporate promotion, which means that there are a lot of them, all vying for attention and following of potential readers. So, in order to reach the success, it is no longer possible to simply write awesome articles and collect ad money – you have to be really good at SEO and always stay on top of the latest developments in this area. Be prepared to learn a lot about cross-linking, meta tags, keywords, guest posting and the alike. In addition to that, if you intend your blog as a source of additional income you should treat it as a real job, which can harm your social life – it isn't something you can pick up, drop for half a year, write an occasional post when you feel like it and so on. Writer's block or no writer's block, a blog has to be updated on a regular basis, or your readers will lose interest.
Vlog: ProsIn a sense, starting a vlog is even easier, although a bit more demanding on a technological scale: you've got to have a decent camera and some other equipment which, if you don't have it, may turn out to be a rather big investment. That done, however, you are free to go. Vlogging doesn't require you to be good at writing because you are going to produce content in a more natural, conversational, informal way, and social and direct communication skills are more important. Some types of content simply cannot be expressed in another form, and a total number of vloggers is still much lower than that of bloggers – which means that if you have something interesting to say and are good at talking and photogenic, you can quickly start earning money.
Vlog: ContrasVlogging's disadvantages come with the format. If you are self-conscious, you may have trouble talking in front of the camera. Perfectionists may find it annoying that it is impossible to edit and alter content after it has been published – or rather, it is possible but very time-consuming. As well as the production of vlogs itself – anything more complicated than just sitting and talking in front of a camera will require a lot of time spent cutting, adding, touching up the sound and so on.
When all is said and done, the choice between blogging and vlogging is fully dependent on your needs and skills. If you are good at improvising and like to talk, try vlogging first. If you like to think ahead and writing comes easily to you, blogging seems a more viable opportunity.—

WordPress 4.9 to Focus on Managing Plugins and Themes, Gutenberg Targeted for 5.0
photo credit: Oli Dale Matt Mullenweg, the overall product lead for core releases in 2017, has published an overview for what users can expect in WordPress versions 4.9 and 5.0. After the success of 4.8 and the initial release of Gutenberg last week, Mullenweg is aiming to see the plugin installed on 100K+ sites during the next few months before merging it into core. He also suggested that WordPress could put a promo for the plugin in the upcoming 4.8.1 release.
"In the meantime I think we can do another user-focused 4.9 release with the theme of editing code and managing plugins and themes, doing v2s and polishing some features we brought into WP last year," Mullenweg said. "Weston and Mel already have some good ideas there, and we can start to discuss and brainstorm at the Dev chat next week. This will also allow the Gutenberg-driven release to be 5.0, which is a nice-to-have but not the primary driver of this decision."
Mullenweg elaborated on changes to the release process in a post on his personal blog. The original idea was for releases to be driven by improvements to the three focus areas (the editor, customizer, and REST API), but the radical changes that Gutenberg introduces to the editing experience means that customization improvements will need to wait until the editor is a little further along:
Mel and Weston took this as an opportunity to think about not just the "Customizer", which is a screen and code base within WP, but really thinking in a user-centric way about what it means to customize a site and they identified a number of low-hanging fruits, areas like widgets where we could have a big user impact with relatively little effort.
WordPress is littered with little inconsistencies and gaps in the user experience that aren't hard to fix, but are hard to notice the 500th time you're looking at a screen.
I didn't think we'd be able to sustain the effort on the editor and still do a meaningful user release in the meantime, but we did, and I think we can do it again.
During this week's core development meeting, contributors brainstormed more specific items for inclusion in 4.9. The ability to schedule customizer changesets is one feature they discussed as a possibility. Customizer component co-maintainer Weston Ruter described the feature as "adding statuses for changesets: being able to draft a changeset to come back to later, and then to be able to schedule it to go live."
The Customize Snapshots feature plugin contains the UI for this and Customize Changesets, the term for the underlying infrastructure required for saving a Customizer session as a draft, was added in WordPress 4.7. Adding the UI in WordPress 4.9 would allow users to share Customizer sessions, preview them outside of the iframe, and schedule them to publish at a future date.
Andrew Roberts, a contributor to TinyMCE, said they should have a new mobile-optimized UX, which would result in a responsive toolbar, that could land within the proposed 4.9 timeframe.
"I would wonder if we couldn't tweak the UI to be closer to Gutenberg (e.g. white toolbars)," Roberts said. "I had raised this idea before and it was thought it was better to wait until Gutenberg, but I remain of the opinion we could iterate a little bit closer to get users used to it."
Contributors also discussed the possibility of changing the default font in the editor to ease the transition to Gutenberg in the future. Currently, Gutenberg uses system fonts for UI and Noto Serif for the editor text.
Mel Choyce, who is heading the Customizer focus with Weston Ruter, said she hopes the team can finish the Gallery Widget for 4.9. Current progress on the widget can be found on GitHub.
WordPress 4.8.1 is tentatively planned for the last week in July, and contributors anticipate including a fix for some issues with the new Text Widget stripping out code.
